Kochi City : Commercial Significance and Future Prospects
A host of development projects are likely to transform Kochi into a key
center of development in South India. An estimated investment of Rs.25,000 crore (Rs.250 billion), both public and private, is in the pipeline seeking to make it an emerging hub of IT and sea-based industries. The connectivity to International Optical
Fiber Networks- SAFE, SEA-ME-WE-3 has already made Kochi a prominent IT hub in the region. This
in turn has led to various IT projects like the Info Park, IT city and various other mega IT projects.

Vallarpadam
Container Terminal
The Rs.2,118 crore (US$442 million) ICTT (International Container Transshipment Terminal, Vallarpadam), India's first global hub terminal, is all set to alter the development map of Kerala, by ushering in huge investment in the upcoming metro city of Kochi.
Cochin, being adjacent to the trunk sea trade route and linked to the hinterlands through a well-developed system of National Highways and rail connection, became an ideal location for the development of the hub terminal.
The Vallarpadam terminal is fast becoming a reality and very soon, Indian containers to all parts of the globe, will no longer have to be
transshipped through adjacent foreign ports like Colombo and Singapore. More importantly, cargo from smaller ports of nearby countries, as well as domestic ports, will start coming to Vallarpadam
terminal, as the mother vessels anchor
in the Kochi waters.

Offshore
Oil Exploration at Kochi by ONGC
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) is conducting a major oil exploration drill off Kochi coast, which could give a major boost to Kerala's industrial prospects.
According to scientists, the geological samples obtained under the sea matched seismic and geo-chemical studies and the chemical study results stand positive for further drilling. Most of the preliminary exploratory drilling confirmed the presence of hydro-carbon, carbohydrate and other chemicals.
Experts say it is a major leap for oil and gas exploration in the country as the basin might be an abundant source of oil and natural gas. Once the basin starts crude oil production, it could provide a big boost to Kerala's economy and development, also opening immense job
opportunities in Kochi.

Petronet
LNG Terminal
Petronet LNG, at the forefront of India's all-out national drive to ensure the country's energy security in the years to come, are in the process of setting up another terminal at Kochi, Kerala, with a capacity of 2.5 MMTPA. The LNG receiving terminal and re-gasification facility in Cochin, is expected to be commissioned in 2012.
The Kochi LNG terminal will add an entirely new chapter to the industrial development of Kerala and some parts of its neighbouring states as there is huge supply deficit as far as natural gas is concerned.

Vyttila
Mobility Hub
The mobility hub at Vyttila is designed to integrate different modes of transport like Metro rail, water transport and road transport. It would ease the increasing traffic needs in Kochi. Around 2000 vehicles are registered every month while 3000 buses conduct daily services. The proposed site would offer 25 acres of land to develop 71 bus bays and 150 parking slots for buses. Along with the bus station, world-class shopping malls, offices, food courts, a cultural centre, health club, hotel, swimming pool, water front and a boat jetty will be developed in its total built-up area of 13,70,000 square feet according to the proposal.
The project aims at setting up a system where different modes of transport converge at one single point making commutation easy for the public. Vyttila was found to be the most ideal location for such a mobility hub, due to Vyttila's strategic location on the national highway 47, and its connectivity to other cities and towns as well as to the city
center of Cochin.
